Mike first came to Flower City CrossFit to try a month of boot camp at the end of June 2011. He had been going to a regular gym off and on and not really getting results for a few years. He knew he had to do something to jump-start his fitness and health levels, and boot camp seemed like a good start for him. That first boot camp was a real eye-opener and he realized just how far off the fitness path he had fallen. With the encouragement of friends, Mike continued to go to boot camp and hasn't looked back since. He converted over to CrossFit at the end of October 2011. In May 2012, Mike participated in the healthy eating challenge at Flower City CrossFit, where he dropped almost 30 pounds in two months and won the challenge! This is where he turned a real corner with his healthy eating which now matched his ever increasing fitness and endurance. This summer, Mike competed in his first 5K with his FCCF friends.
How did you learn about Flower City CrossFit?
I first became aware of Flower City CrossFit when I saw a friend on Facebook tagged in some photos. I had never heard of CrossFit, but I was intrigued by the pictures of him running around outside, flipping tires, pushing sleds and using sledgehammers. It seemed like a much more interesting workout than just going to the gym and being bored, but I didn't really act on it. Then a few months later I saw a Living Social coupon for Boot Camp classes and sent my friend an email to ask if it was a similar thing. It turned out it was for Flower City, and he encouraged me to give it a go. So I took the plunge, deciding that it was time to finally try to get in shape and lose some weight.
What do you like best about Flower City CrossFit?
I have to say the community. The trainers are great and really supportive. They work with everyone to make sure that you're able to do the workouts, even if they're scaled or modified. And the people that go to the gym are amazing. Everyone cheers on everyone else, and there's a very friendly atmosphere. Even times when I've been really slow on a workout or felt like I've bitten off more than I could chew, people are right there with you, encouraging you to finish, with no judgement. I don't think I would have ever lasted at a place that wasn't so supportive.
What has been your greatest moment at CrossFit?
It's hard to choose just one! Probably the biggest personal moment came when I ran my first 5k in July 2012. It was almost exactly a year after my first boot camp class, and I had never run that distance before in my life. But with no training other than CrossFit, I ran the whole way and completed it! That race demonstrated that CrossFit had improved not only my body, but my mental state as well. Something that had seemed impossible just a year ago was something that I realized I could do.

TriathaWOD is a charity event hosted by our gym along with CrossFit 585. It took place last Saturday and consisted of a team WOD at CrossFit 585, a team relay run from 585 to FCCF, and then a final team WOD at FCCF. We ended the morning with an awards ceremony and potluck lunch. Seventy-two athletes competed in this fun and challenging event. We are proud to say that TriathaWOD raised funds to be donated to Mercy Flight. Congrats to all the athletes who competed and thanks to all the volunteers that helped make this event run so smoothly.
You asked... and we listened. We have opened up even more sections of CrossFit, CrossFit Endurance and Bootcamp! This morning was our first THURSDAY 5 am CrossFit class. The inaugural 5am Thursday Crossfit WOD participants are pictured to the left. That 5 am crowd is always so happy. Yes... these are people who choose to get up at 4 am. I love it!
We now have CrossFit classes many days at 5 am, 6 am, 7 am, 9 am, noon, 4 pm, 5 pm, 6 pm, and 7 pm! With CrossFit memberships, you choose how many times you go per week -- it is not based on which class you attend. Therefore, we have a lot of flexibility to accommodate busy schedules! We've also added some 5 pm Boot Camp classes and some CrossFit endurance classes at noon and in the evening. Check out the full schedule below. It’s Official. Over the last 24 months, I’ve lost 60 lbs. After a three year bout with self-diagnosed “chubby newlywed syndrome”, I knew something had to be done. I made a point to sign up and train for a local 8k charity race as a starting point. Once I realized how much better I felt, I started playing soccer again! It wasn’t until I hit the dreaded weight loss plateau that I felt I needed to do more to push myself. It was a simple Groupon offer and the motivation of a CrossFitter named Morgan Howe that led me to the doors of Flower City CrossFit. I recall thinking, “I have no clue what this CrossFit stuff is about, but I’ll give it a whirl.” A whirl is what it has been.
By the second Bootcamp class, I was hooked. CrossFit is about targeting, scaling, and motivating through regular milestones in training. This is not an exclusive club but rather an all-inclusive approach to being healthy. That simple Groupon opened the door to widely varied exercise routines, clean eating, and a great group of people. CrossFit has become a major part of my life. It has transformed by body through exercise but also through clean eating, as I’ve adopted a hybrid Zone/Paleo diet. In the 18 months prior to joining “the CrossFit box,” I lost 30 pounds. In the last 6 months since joining CrossFit, I’ve continued my weight loss, dropping another 30 pounds.
What have you learned about yourself through this journey?
What I have learned through my CrossFit journey is that I am strong, both physically and mentally. With CrossFit, you can turn your body into what you want it to be, rather than settling on what it is. I can now do more in both my personal and professional life with more energy than I could ever have imagined.
What has been your greatest moment at CrossFit?
My greatest moment at CrossFit was when I realized I CAN vs. I CAN’T. We had a WOD event at the gym which consisted of several double-unders (jumping roping in which the rope passes beneath your feet twice within a single jump). Prior to this event, I was super new and a novice to these. But during this event I was able to consistently do 30 in a row. I beamed. I had done it. I knew from then forward that nothing is impossible.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
What I like most about CrossFit is the sense of community. Even if you don’t think you can finish a workout, everyone else at the gym cheers you on and encourages you to finish, no matter what. Even if you’ve had a tough day, there’s always someone willing to listen. CrossFitters are supportive of one another. This support and community has led to many personal friendships, for which I’m very grateful.
