Success Story - Bob Hartman!

Thank you Bob for sharing your story! You are an inspiration to all of us at FCCF!
I have been obese my entire life. My weight was pushing 300 pounds in May 2011 when I joined a local “globo-gym” and decided to start eating healthier. These lifestyle changes were very important for me, but I found that they were not enough. I found myself doing the same routine every time I went to the gym and making very little athletic progress. I was definitely losing weight, but I didn’t feel like my overall fitness was improving.
I hit a plateau and I dreaded going to the gym because I was getting very discouraged with minimal gains in strength and endurance. My wife, Meg, and I saw a Groupon for Flower City CrossFit and we decided to give it a try.
Fast forward to today and my total weight loss is over 100 pounds. I have moved from being intimidated by 12-inch box jumps during Bootcamp to successfully completing WODs (workouts of the day) with 30-inch burpee box jumps. Before CrossFit, I had never in my life been able to run an entire mile from start to finish without stopping to walk. After doing two months of Bootcamp classes and two months of WODs, I was able to run in the Chase Corporate Challenge in Rochester and finished all 3.5 miles without stopping to walk. Four months later I ran in the Rochester Marathon Relay with three other members of Flower City CrossFit, and completed my 6.5 mile leg.
Flower City CrossFit hasn’t just improved my athleticism; it has improved my overall health. My life insurance premium was literally cut in half after I was re-assessed seven months after first walking through the doors at FCCF. Two years ago my doctor wanted me on a medication for my cholesterol, and I had hypertension. Today I am not on any medication, my cholesterol is over 100 points lower, and my blood pressure is well within the healthy range.
I attribute my success not only to the great programming and workouts, but also the extraordinary community at Flower City CrossFit. Every time I go I know it’s going to be very hard, it’s going to push me, and it’s going to test my limits. I also know, however, that every other person in the class is going to encourage me and help motivate me through the workout. The trainers are incredible. They are not only knowledgeable and helpful, but also very encouraging and know how to bring out the best in all the members. It is hard to overstate the importance this community has played in my weight loss and my successes.
Thank you to my wonderful wife Meg, who motivated me to start losing weight and started (and continues) this CrossFit journey with me. And thank you to everyone at Flower City CrossFit who inspire me to set new goals and new personal records.
