Success Story: Urvi

Thank you to Urvi for writing about her journey in CrossFit. She is an inspiration to so many members! Kudos on an amazing first seven months in CrossFit!
In her words:
"From hiding my arms to LOVING my arms! My first 7 months of journey with CrossFit has been Amazing!
I have always been active and a high energy person. I have always worked out. Physically challenging myself was never an issue. I learned swimming and ice skating side-by-side with my son. Thanks to my parents for teaching values of being active in life! I always pushed myself to try new things.
Since moving away from India about 15 years ago to the U.S., maintaining my weight has been a constant struggle. Initially, it was due to a very different lifestyle -- completely different food exposure and a little too much comfort in life. For past few years, I blamed it to poor metabolism with growing age, as I had hit a plateau!
Then I came across Flower City CrossFit's boot camp Groupon and I immediately jumped on that opportunity. I am so glad that I didn't question or doubt my instinct. That was a game changer for me. While doing boot camp classes, I witnessed a bunch of people working out in the other room doing CrossFit (which first appeared quiet intimidating). I was not sure if I was ready to move on to CrossFit classes, but thanks to some encouragement from the instructors and friends, I took the leap. They assured me that there was scaling for everything and I could work at my own pace towards improving and getting to Rx (the highest level of a workout) some workouts. After three months of doing boot camp classes, I decided to give it a try.
Just one week into it, I LOVED everything about it!
I joined CrossFit classes in Dec 2014. It's been almost seven months now and I still do not lift Rx weights on most workouts and do many scaled. But at the same time, I have achieved many personal successes. When you set a personal record (PR) on anything at the gym, you go ring the bell at the front of the gym. It has been a music to my ears! Every small achievement is a victory in itself and CrossFit provides so many areas to grow.
I still remember the day when I did my first double under (swinging the jumprope around twice with one jump). Oh how thrilled I was and showed it to Jeff, the owner, a few times! After coming home, I showed it to my husband and my son! I sent text messages to my sister and girlfriends and was full of pride. ;-) They all cheered for me even though they had no idea what double-unders were! I LOVE them and all of their encouragement!!!
This is the feeling I get pretty nearly every day after I finish a WOD (Workout of the Day) since I push myself and keep improving. I continue to be the better version of ME and everyone around me, at the gym and my incredible friends and family, celebrate my small successes. :-)
I still have a long way to go but thanks to FCCF, I discovered many of my hidden strengths. I had no idea about my flexibility OR that I could LIFT weights in three digits! I never ever did any hardcore weight lifting in the past. Discovering this about myself was pretty impressive! I didn't enjoy running at all, but with the strength I have developed, I ran my first 5K race in under 35 minutes. Now I can run between 3-5 miles on any given day!
My competition is not with others or clock. My competition is with my own time, strength and endurance. And the best part is that no one cares how slow I am in my run or how long I take to finish WOD. No one is judging me. All they do is encourage everyone to be their best. If you are the last one to finish, they pump you up to finish even STRONGER! I have had those days and fellow CrossFitters were not ready to leave me alone. :-)) It's a great community at FCCF! Instructors and everyone who work out here are strong in their own way and extremely supportive!
So why do I feel the way I feel at FCCF and why did I get asked to write a success story even though I have not RX'd most everything? Because.... I am a perfect example of the power of CrossFit -- both physically and mentally. I am so excited about my tone and strong body!
My family is so supportive and encouraging! I appreciate them so much for suppporting the changes we have made. I also decided to modify my diet to get the best results. I started eating healthier, watching my portions and logging my food. By doing 5-6 days of CrossFit and watching my food, it was a PERFECT winning combination for me to push my plateau. I have been following this for past six months and today I am 36 lbs. lighter. :-) I have dropped 8 pant sizes and the most exciting thing is that I have a body that I NEVER had! But I am even more thrilled about how I FEEL.
I am so thrilled that I tried CrossFit before my BIG 40th birthday next year. Thank you FCCF and to all of the instructors and fellow CrossFitters! Keep CALM and WOD ON!!"
